Dear Sir or Madam

TLC is advertising pretty heavily for their new show, Police Women of Broward County, here in the city. Every day on the way to work I walk past a poster ad on the side of a phone booth that says, Feel free to call them “Sir” above the show’s logo. It drives me insane. It’s just the worst ad campaign ever. What it basically intimates that only people you would call “sir” wield any real power.

In other words, women only have power in this scheme because they are “like” men. Only men have real power, right? Come on.

Attention: Cornhole. That Is All.

Anonymous Internet Commenters Respond To Lousy Lindsey Graham – Lindsey Graham Insults

This is really perfect. EXACTLY how I feel about all the Does -Sonia-Sotomayor-Have-a-Bad-Attitude hoopla. From behind the cloak of anonymity, everyone is an asshole. No one should be forced, especially at a confirmation hearing, to respond to anonymous criticism, particularly criticism that in all likelihood comes from predominantly male lawyers and coworkers.

Jon Stewart hits another one out of the park.

I know that the UK’s Daily Mail isn’t exactly a pillar of journalistic integrity, but when I read this article about the amazing woman behind the forthcoming Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary, I felt so irate with it’s author that I couldn’t help but comment on it. My comment hasn’t posted yet, so I’ll paste in what I wrote:

I think it’s reprehensible that Mr. Mount feels it necessary to repeatedly remind us that Ms. Kay is unmarried. Calling her a “spinster” in the headline is ridiculous. It’s an offensive, gendered term that has nothing to do with Prof. Kay or her incredible life’s work. More

Ultimately we won’t need a word like feminism or women’s liberation because it will be, and should be, just life. Because there is still a power difference and a visibility difference, we need to have names that make us see things in a new way.
